We first spied this on Twitter and were subsequently pleased to learn that [Jayzon Oeve] has posted a more detailed build log over on Hackaday.io. Rather than a moving array of dots to create the characters to display, this uses a single IN-12b Nixie tube at the end of a pendulum. The pendulum is kept moving by a small nudge created by a pulse through a fixed hard drive voice coil acting on a magnet affixed to the bottom of the pendulum — we’ve seen a similar approach used before.

Pretty much all of the electronics are mounted on the pendulum arm, including a Nano, an RTC, and an accelerometer to figure out where in the swing the bob is and when to flash a number on the display. There’s a video below that shows it at work both at full speed and in slow-motion; as always with POV clocks, these things probably look better in person than on video. And while swinging Nixies around like that seems a little dicey, we like the way this turned out.

Keywound Pendulum Clocks

These Pendulum Clocks are built with a movement that is powered by a series of two or three springs wound tightly in a barrel(s) inside the movement. The release of the tension of the springs creates the energy to power the clock. Some will use a weight which starts near

the top of the Pendulum Clock and travels toward the bottom over the course of a week to power the clock instead of a spring. The pendulum swinging back and forth dictates how fast or how slow the time is indicated on the dial. The longer the pendulum, the slower the clock will run and the shorter the length, the faster the clock will run. The length is adjusted by a small nut on the bottom of the round parts of the Pendulum Clock called the ‘bob”. When the nut is turned to the right on it’s threaded rod, the bob travels upward making the clock run faster as you have shortened the length of the pendulum. Moving the nut to the left will lengthen the pendulum making the clock run slower. Usually a full turn at any point equals about one minute per day, but this may be different from pendulum clock to pendulum clock.

Mechanical Keywound pendulum clocks will never keep as good of time as a modern quartz clock, but if one is willing to spend some time adjusting the pendulum nut, you can achieve very good results in the accuracy of the clock. Setting the clock to an accurate time source like a cell phone, set the pendulum clock exactly to the correct time when it advances to the next minute. Look again 24 hours later and determine how much time has been lost or gained and move the pendulum clock nut accordingly. You probably do not want to move it more than a 1/2 turn at a time…then reset the hand on your clock to the correct time and try it again and this time, move the nut less than the previous day. Repeat this for a few days and your clock may be amazingly accurate for a mechanical pendulum clock.

Keywound pendulum clocks usually need to be wound once per week to keep the clock running. This is done by inserting the key into the clock in the holes in the dial (winding arbors). These may turn clockwise or counterclockwise to wind depending on the model. Wind until tight and don’t be too afraid to wind until fully tight. It is just about impossible to over wind a modern day key wound pendulum clock.

The Key-wind pendulum clock will also tick with each swing of the pendulum. Many love to hearing the calming sound of the ticking clock, but may annoy others. If you wish for your clock not to tick, you might wish to consider a Quartz pendulum clock.

The length of good service from your keywound pendulum clock depends on how you have it serviced. Having your clock properly oiled with special lubricates specifically made for clocks will greatly lengthen the life of the clock. This should be done at least every five years or so.

Quartz pendulum clocks are those that have a movement inside that is battery powered. A fresh set of Duracell batteries will power most of these clocks for up to 3 years at a time. Most of the quartz pendulum clocks have a chiming feature where the chimes are digital recordings played through a speaker. Most of them sound impressive. The Quartz pendulum clocks keep better time than a key-wind clock and they cost significantly less than a key-wind clock and require no maintenance or winding. Seriously, with how annoying Kidde fire alarms are I would really rather burn to death.  It complains regularly and loudly about low battery, and brand new duracells last for about 3 weeks. It REQUIRES an extremely loud, intrusive test upon changing batteries that is non-interruptible and non-silencable, i.e. once you put in the battery it complains until you press the test button and then proceeds to actually alarm for about 5 minutes.

This is terrible user experience design.  If I didn’t need to keep it up to date to make sure my landlady doesn’t get in trouble, then you know what I would do? NOT HAVE A FIRE ALARM.  Devices need to not punish users for using it.  Know how to do that? It’s easy. 

Don’t build the test in as mandatory, keep it as an optional or semi-optional feature.

Reduce power consumption, probably by reducing some “smart home” nonsense you’re doing inside.  It’s here to test for carbon monoxide and fires.  It should be a simple device.  Keep It Simple Stupid!

Auditory notifications also will alert everyone in your surroundings, i.e. not only your user but EVERYONE NEAR YOUR USER.  The neighbors don’t give a flying fuck.  Do not use sounds as notifications in general unless they are short and unobtrusive, and even then probably don’t.

Cannot emphasize KISS enough, keep it simple! It tests for CO and fire (smoke I assume, maybe heat), has one button, has one indicator light, has one speaker.  Do not add more features unless you can similarly keep things simple.  If your marketing department puts “smart” in front of any feature it’s probably a bad feature to add.  This should be nearly mechanical. This is not a device to make complex.  Part of technology is knowing what to use and when to use it.

This week, the flagship outpost of London’s White Cube gallery opens Tracey Emin’s first show of new work in the U.K. capital since 2014. To describe this as a big deal would be an understatement: Along with David Hockney and Damien Hirst, Emin is indisputably one of Britain’s most famous artists, a YBA icon who—in her home country, at least—has well and truly become a household name, the picture of the artist-as-brand. Her work across various media is both deeply personal but instantly recognizable—yet despite its confessional nature, it has become a signifier for a certain kind of luxury consumerism. Her scrappy, Schiele-in-remedial-class drawings of nudes and the hot pink neons of handwritten phrases can be found everywhere from P. Diddy’s collection to the Eurostar terminal at Saint Pancras train station, her cursive as distinctive a calling card as the logo of a high-end fashion label.

As such, Emin’s celebrity could be considered something of an obstacle to assessing the art she makes. If you’re of the opinion that respectability is the kiss of death to artistic integrity, you may well find Emin’s work problematic: As a professor of drawing at London’s ultra-patrician Royal Academy and holder of some ludicrously quaint titles (in 2013, she was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire), it’s fair to say that Emin became respectable long ago. Indeed, possibly as a nod to her public endorsement of his right-wing Conservative party back in 2009, one of Emin’s neon works, blazing the blandly corporate phrase “More Passion,” took pride of place on the walls of 10 Downing Street during Prime Minister David Cameron’s ill-fated premiership. Nothing, and nobody, can get more Establishment than that.

And yet, for reasons I’ll come to, I will never begrudge Emin the gilded status she occupies in British public life—because, frankly, she deserves it. Twenty years ago, long before she was elevated to the higher echelons of society, Emin was a pariah in the national consciousness. In 1999, she was nominated for the Turner Prize, Britain’s most prestigious art award. Though the financial stakes may be relatively low—£25,000 goes to the eventual winner, £5,000 apiece to the other three shortlisted artists—it is a major event, with the awards ceremony broadcast live on a primetime slot on evening TV. To put it simply, it is the only moment of the calendar year when the wider British public pays any attention to new art—and pay attention they did. Emin’s contributions to the Turner Prize exhibition that year sparked a media furore that enshrined her as the bad girl of British art and made her the target of furious bile.

To be sure, any of the exhibits of Emin’s show-within-a-show would have guaranteed a degree of controversy. There was a punkish tapestry incorporating a crude Union Jack, and some less-than-respectable phrases in appliqué: “They were the ugly cunts”; “No fucking way no”; and, perhaps most memorably, “Pissing pure cider until it rains.” In a small room separated from the main exhibition space, you could watch a truly harrowing film in which she recounted a teenage abortion. More troubling still was her 1995 Super 8 movie Why I Never Became a Dancer,in the course of which her deadpan voiceover relates her sexual history in detail, considered shocking at that time. (“It was something you could just do, and it was for free,” she says at one point.) She goes on to reminisce about entering a dance competition at the age of 15, and when she took to the stage, she was greeted with chants of “Slag! Slag! Slag!” from men in the audience.

But the main exhibition, the one for which Emin was nominated, proved truly inflammatory. As you entered the gallery, you were immediately greeted by the sight of a bed, the sort of thing you might see in an IKEA showroom. It was not the most intelligent art exhibition I’ve seen, let alone the best, yet nothing has ever had such a pronounced, disquieting impact on me. Though it features a return to video work, I doubt her new show at White Cube will leave a comparable impression. Buffett and long-time Berkshire vice chairman Charlie Munger are likely to elicit numerous chuckles as they discuss their thoughts on the markets and economy and take questions from investors about the company, individual stocks and politics.

The two are kind of like a married couple who’ve been together for years, often telling (and laughing at) the same jokes.

But whether or not this is your first time tuning in to the Warren and Charlie show or if you’re a grizzled veteran of Berkshire meetings, here are six things to keep an eye on for anyone, whether you’re heading to Nebraska, or watching in sweatpants on the couch.

1. Whither Wells? One of Berkshire’s top holdings is the troubled bank Wells Fargo (WFC). The company has changed CEOs in the wake of the fake account scandal.

Berkshire owns about 473 million shares of Wells Fargo. Berkshire has been forced to sell a small position in Wells lately in order to keep its stake in the company below 10%, a limit set by the Federal Reserve for outside investors.

But some investors are surprised that Buffett hasn’t been more critical of Wells. He famously talked about having no tolerance for hits to his company’s reputation back in 1991, when talking to Congress about a scandal at investment bank Salomon Brothers.

Buffett told CNN’s Poppy Harlow last November that he backs new CEO Tim Sloan and is still bullish on the bank’s future.

Several shareholders have questioned Buffett about his ethics in the past few years. He’s been taken to task for partnerships with private equity firm 3G, which has often laid off workers at companies it buys.

And some investors have expressed concerns about Berkshire’s ownership of manufactured home Clayton, which has been criticized for its foreclosure practices, particularly for minority borrowers. Buffett has defended both 3G and Clayton repeatedly.

2. Airlines lose altitude. Buffett turned some heads last year after Berkshire disclosed sizable stakes in four huge U.S. airlines — United (UAL), Delta (DAL), American (AAL) and Southwest (LUV). But this industry has recently come under fire for how it treats its customers.

United has had to apologize for dragging a passenger off a plane when he didn’t want to be bumped from his flight. Delta was criticized for how it handled thousands of flight cancellations last month due to weather issues.

So Buffett is now backing another hard to love industry. Some investors may ask him if he still has faith in the sector and, more pointedly, whether he should continue to implicitly endorse the industry’s bad behavior by owning the airline stocks.

It also doesn’t help that he might have gotten in late. After years of benefiting from low fuel prices, rising fees and consolidation, there are now concerns the sector’s profits may have peaked. Southwest is the only airline stock Buffett owns that is up this year.

3. Trump bump? Buffett, a vocal backer of Hillary Clinton, was asked at last year’s shareholder meeting if he was worried about what Trump would do to stocks if elected. Buffett sarcastically quipped that his portfolio would be the least of his concerns.

But Buffett has struck a more conciliatory tone since then, telling CNN’s Harlow shortly after the election that he supports Trump – as he would any president. He even said he’d be happy to offer Trump advice if the president asked for it.

And so far, Buffett’s portfolio has actually done quite well since Trump’s victory — thanks to hopes for tax reform and other pro-business policies.

Berkshire shares are up more than 12% since early November, slightly ahead of the broader market. So it will be interesting to hear what Buffett thinks of Trump now.

4. Who’s the next Berkshire CEO? Buffett will turn 87 in August. Munger is 93. News flash. Even if both will still be alive when Berkshire holds its 2027 annual meeting, there are valid questions over who will lead the company.

Buffett and Munger have already strongly suggested that Berkshire insurance guru Ajit Jain and energy chief Greg Abel are the front-runners for the CEO spot.

Investing lieutenants Ted Weschler and Todd Combs will likely continue to manage Berkshire’s investments.

In other words, it will take multiple people to replace Buffett. So investors may want even more clarity about succession planning.

5. iBuffett. Berkshire has a well-known Big Four group of stocks. Wells, IBM (IBM, Tech30), Coke (KO) and American Express (AXP). Berkshire now owns a gigantic stake in Kraft Heinz (KHC) as well.

But there’s a sixth company that Berkshire has been busily scooping up shares of too — Apple.

Apple (AAPL, Tech30) accounts for about 5.5% of the Berkshire portfolio. Will Buffett continue to buy more? Could it one day move past AmEx into the top five of Berkshire’s investments — despite Buffett’s friendship with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates?

Buffett is well-known to be somewhat of a tech neophyte. So it will be interesting to see if any shareholders ask him for specific reasons why he likes Apple.

It could simply be a case that Apple, a market dominating company with a strong balance sheet and reasonable valuation, is too cheap to ignore — even if Buffett doesn’t spend his days posting Facebook updates and watching YouTube videos on an iPhone.

6. More deals coming? Buffett loves to hunt for bargains.

In 2009, Berkshire has scooped up giant railroad Burlington Northern Santa Fe — a purchase he dubbed an “all-in” wager on the U.S. economy.

Berkshire also first bought Heinz in 2013 and then merged that with Kraft in 2015. And Kraft Heinz tried (but failed) to convince Unilever (UL) to do a more than $140 billion deal earlier this year.

Berkshire also bought battery maker Duracell from Procter & Gamble (PG) in 2014. And in 2015, it did its biggest deal ever — the $32 billion purchase of aircraft components maker Precision Castparts.

Buffett is likely not done shopping. He wrote in his annual shareholder letter that Berkshire has about $86 billion in cash that it could use for deals.

That has investors fantasizing about a mega acquisition that could top $100 billion. Expect Berkshire shareholders to try and get Buffett to name some of the potential targets on his wish list.
